Custom built with references to Alden and others, this 37’ (L.O.D.) auxiliary cutter was well constructed using mahogany planks and is finished with a teak deck. No shortcuts were made during the building of this 17,800 lbs cutter.

She has been sparingly sailed by her two owners and has low hours on her Volvo inboard engine.

She sleeps four in classic comfort below decks

Her mast is constructed of Douglas Fir. Sails include a mainsail, staysail and yankee.

This yacht is constructed in accordance with, or by standards equivalent to, Lloyd's Register of Shipping Rules & Regulations for the Construction & Classification of Yachts (Vol. 1, Wood & Composite Yachts, Sailing, Auxiilary & Full Power). Classification & Class Notation: 100A1, YACHT.

Cold moulded using epoxy blue and silicon bronze fasteners (Epoxy-Gougeon Brothers "West System"). The hull framing consists of laminated Douglas Fir keel & sheer clamp. There are twenty laminated Douglas Fir stringers over three permanent full size bulkheads and one semi-bulkhead. The hull is further strengthened with a bridge-deck between the cockpit and cabin. The hull is triple diagonal planked with 11/32 in. in width bedded in epoxy and silicon bronze fastened to the framing and each other. All planking is full length from sheer to keel (no butt joints). Outer planking is sheathed in Xynole-polyester (Defender Ind.) bedded in epoxy.

Ballast Keel: The ballast keel is lead with 2.75 tons bolted to the hull utilizing nine 1" diameter galvanized steel bolts, washers and nuts with laminated wood and steel floors. The bolts are encapsulated in epoxy in accordance with J.R. Watson (Tech. Consultant for Gougeon Bros.) recommendations. Also there are 0.50 ton of lead ingots of removable trim ballast in the bilge.

Rudder: The rudder is of epoxy laminated wood sheathed in Xynole-polyester bedded in epoxy. The rudder is bolted to a custom cast bronze rudder stock with 7-5/8" S/S threaded rods tapped into the rudder stock and extending the full width of the rudder. The rudder stock was fabricated by Lunenburg Foundry, NS). Wheel steering utilizing bronze rack and pinion mechanism (Edson, USA).

Deck: The deck consists of two layers of 3/8" marine grade Douglas Fir plywood with all joints staggered and epoxy and silicon bronze fastened to clamp, deck beams and cabin carlines.  The deck beams are laminated red spruce. The plywood deck is over-laid with Burma teak bedded in epoxy with epoxy-carbon seams as per Gougeon Bros. manual on wood boat construction.

Cabin: Cabin sides are constructed of marine grade Douglas Fir plywood 3/4" thick over-laid on the exterior by 5/16" African mahogany epoxy and bronze fastened in place. The cabin roof curved beams are laminated African mahogany. The cabin roof consists of two layers of 1/4" marine grade Douglas Fir plywood epoxied together with staggered joints and epoxy & bronze fastened to the cabin sides and roof beams. The cabin top, like the hull, is sheathed in Xynole-polyester embedded in epoxy. The cabin roof has two opening hatches constructed of teak and glazed with 1/2" plexiglass. There are four dorade ventilation vents of teak with Nicro 4" low profile cowls. The entrance sliding hatch with drop boards (2) are to CCA standards. The aft cockpit has four 1-1/2" drains utilizing bronze seacocks (Spartan) and is built to "ORC Cockpit & Drain Regulations". Aft of the cockpit is an all teak hatch for access to rudder stock and transom exhaust outlet.


The below deck layout, starting at the bow, is as follows: From the stem to the first bulkhead is the head which consists of the toilet (Blake Lavac-England), a 15-gallon plastic holding tank and stainless steel sink. Toilet, holding tank and bilge are all pumped by a Henderson hand pump (Mk 5) and three Blake "Y" valves.  The sink is emptied by a Whale manual pump directly into the holding tank.  Toilet inlet and outlet valves are high quality bronze seacocks (Blake).  Next between bulkheads to and three is the owners sleeping cabin consisting of a double bunk on the port side with storage underneath and a hanging locker on the starboard. Between bulkhead three and the semi-bulkhead is the salon consisting of port & starboard settee with storage behind both.  Under each settee is a 18 gallon water tank. The starboard settee is also an extension berth. The salon also contains a mahogany drop-leaf cabin table.  In the salon bilge, there is a 30-gallon water tank. Aft of the semi-bulkhead is the galley port side. Galley stove to be diesel (Dickenson). The stainless-steel sink is supplied by a hand pump. On the starboard side is the chart table and yachts switchboard. Aft of the chart table is a quarter berth.

Sails and Rigging

Sail inventory consists of one set of Dacron working sails; 1-9oz mainsail, 1-9oz staysail, 1-7oz yankee jib. Total sail area 720 sq.ft.

Both the mast and boom are constructed of select Douglas Fir.  Both are hollow and are blocked where required for fittings. The mast contains crumpled aluminum foil to assist in radar reflection. All hardware on the boom (boom bail, gooseneck and slab reefing) are of bronze with sail track of hard anodized aluminum.  All screw and bolt fastenings are of bronze or stainless steel. Length of boom is 16'. The mast is deck stepped and is 42' from step to truck.  The mast vertical load is taken by the deck mast step supported by a specifically designed full bulkhead backed by an aluminum pipe from cabin top to keel. All mast fittings for the standing rigging is custom built of 316 stainless steel, 1/8" thick with all fastening screws and bolts of stainless steel. All mast fittings bedded using 3M 5200 marine adhesive compound. The sail track is hard anodized aluminum.

Standing Rigging:  All standing rigging is of 316 S16 stainless wire. The standing rigging is 1 x 19, 8mm in diameter. All stainless steel rigging components; turnbuckles, toggles, pins, terminals & wire are by J. Shaw Ltd (England) & Hasselfors (Sweden). All by both companies are certified by Lloyd's Register of Shipping.  There are two (port & starboard) running backstays to support the load imposed by the staysail in heavy winds. Running Rigging: All running rigging (sheets & halyards) are 1/2" diameter double braided pre-stretched dacron.  Jib and staysail sheets are handled by  two Lewmar #30 self-tailing winches utilizing 2 double (p & s) Lewmar Superlocks (2910-2104). Halyard and reef lines are handled by two mast mounted Lewmar winches (#16ST & #7) utilizing three mast mounted Lewmar Superlocks (2910-2104) and one Schaefer cam cleat (70-38). All blocks used in the running rigging are Lewmar "Ocean series" as are all shackles.

The yacht is equipped with a newer Volvo model 2002, 2 cyl., 4-stroke direct injected, fresh water cooled diesel with 3:1 transmission with reverse gear. The propeller shaft output is 18hp at 3200 RPM. There is a 17" two blade feathering propeller ("Max Prop"). The engine is equipped with two charging alternators. One alternator, with battery, dedicating to starting only.  The second alternator, with double diode charging distributor, with battery(s), dedicated to lights and other electrical equipment. All other engine accessories (exhaust system, fresh water cooling, extra alternator, s/s fuel tank (40L), salt water filter, cooling water intake seacock) was supplied by Volvo. Installed on the fuel tank line is an additional fuel filter and water separator (Racor).


All electrical wire is of marine grade, stranded and tinned, and meets AWG wire specifications for a maximum 3% voltage drop.  All circuits are fuse protected at two marine grade switchboards. The electrical system is 12 volts which supplies two systems of navigation lights (sail & power) plus deck light and circuits for interior lighting, compass, depth sounder and electric bilge pump.

The yacht carries two anchors carried on a short (2.8') platform bowsprit. One 45lb Plow anchor and a 40lb Plow anchor. Two anchor rode’s; one 200' 5/8" double braid Dacron; one consisting of 30' of 3/8" proof coil galvanized chain & 300' of 5/8" three strand nylon (Sampson). There are 8 docking lines and 4 fenders.

The yacht carries all safety equipment in compliance with Canadian Coast Guard requirements for a vessel 12m in length. The yacht is equipped with jack lines port & starboard. The yacht's lifelines, fabricated from 1" diameter s/s tubing is comprised of pulpit, push pit and 10 stanchions with double lifelines.
